Getting started

Install RideHero from Google Play, allow location, notifications and unrestricted battery when the app asks, then hold the green START button to record your first ride. No account is needed.

1. Install

Get RideHero on Google Play. It runs on Android phones.

2. The first-launch walkthrough

The first time you open RideHero it welcomes you, then asks for a few things, one screen each:

  1. Location - to show you on the map and record your rides. While a ride records with the screen off, Android shows a notification so it keeps running.
  2. Notifications - the recording notification is what keeps a ride alive when the screen is off, and it shows at a glance that RideHero is recording.
  3. Keep recording - tap Open battery settings: Android opens RideHero's App info. Scroll to Battery and choose Unrestricted, then come back. Android stops apps in the background to save battery, and that is how rides get lost.

You can skip a step with Not now and allow it later.

3. Mount the phone

Any handlebar phone holder works. If yours has bands over the corners, set Menu > Screen > Phone holder > STRAPS so the battery, clock and buttons move clear of the bands. See Screen and holder.

4. Your first ride

  1. Hold the green START button (right). The button fills as you hold and the phone buzzes when it takes.
  2. While recording the button shows REC with a red dot. Hold it to pause; it turns amber (PAUSED). Hold again to resume.
  3. To finish, hold STOP (left). The ride is saved and the button reads START again.

Swipe left and right, or tap a dot at the bottom, to change page: big numbers for rough ground, nine numbers at once for a stop, and the map. See Your pages.

5. After the ride

Open Menu > Past rides > All rides and tap the ride for its map, height profile and replay. To keep your rides safe and see them on a computer, turn on Backup.

Questions

Why does RideHero need unrestricted battery?

Android stops apps in the background to save battery, and that is how rides get lost. With Unrestricted, RideHero keeps recording with the screen off.

Does RideHero need an account?

No. Without an account your rides stay on your phone. An account is only for backup and the web dashboard.

Why do the buttons need a hold instead of a tap?

So a bump on rough ground doesn't start, pause or end a ride by accident. The button fills as you hold and the phone buzzes when it takes.
