Battery and mobile data
The screen backlight uses the most battery and GPS comes second. Recording itself uses no mobile data; the map, weather, Track me and backup do.
Make the battery last
- Dim the screen when you stop - Menu > Screen > Dimming > Dim when stopped 5 min. It never dims while you move and wakes the instant you roll. See Screen.
- Use the dark theme - Menu > Screen > Appearance > DARK is true black, so the pixels switch off.
- Fix GPS less often on long rides - Menu > Account & settings > GPS fixes: every 1s (most accurate, most battery), 3s or 5s. At 5 s, singletrack corners get cut.
- Keep recording with the screen off - set RideHero's battery to Unrestricted (see Getting started), so Android doesn't stop the ride to save battery.
Mobile data
- The map streams as you ride and uses a little data.
- Weather - the temperature, wind and rain where you are.
- Track me sends small batches of positions while a link is live.
- Backup copies each finished ride to your account.
Without signal the ride still records. The map waits for signal, and Track me points wait on the phone and go when the signal returns.
Questions
What uses the most battery?
The screen backlight, then GPS. Dimming the screen when you stop and the dark theme help most.
What uses mobile data?
The map, which streams as you ride, the weather, a live Track me link while it is on, and backup when a ride is copied to your account. Recording itself uses no data.
